Mr. Giovanni Buttarelli was appointed European Data Protection Supervisor in December 2014 by a joint decision of the European Parliament and the Council for a term of five years.
Before joining the EDPS, he worked as Secretary General to the Italian Data Protection Authority, a position he occupied from 1997 to 2009. A member of the Italian judiciary with the rank of Cassation judge, he has attended to many initiatives and committees on data protection and related issues at international level.
The experience on data protection includes the participation in many bodies at European Union level (including Art. 31 Committee of Directive n. 95/46/EC and Taiex programs), and at the Council of Europe, as well as the contribution to many hearings, meetings and workshops held also by Parliaments and to specialized book journals and papers.
He currently teaches on privacy at the Luiss University, Rome.

Sofie Melis joined IFPMA in September 2016 and leads its Ethics and Compliance portfolio, which includes the global implementation and management of the IFPMA Code of Practice and the coordination of the Ethics & Business Integrity Committee. In her capacity, Sofie closely works with international stakeholders in building strategic partnerships that support public health goals worldwide.
In the previous 8 years of her career, Sofie has worked in corporate compliance for both Eli Lilly and Biogen Idec. Prior to that she held several roles in organisational learning & development in the banking, electronics and consulting industry. Just before joining the IFPMA, Sofie completed a one year assignment with the International Committee of the Red Cross as Head of HR Compliance.
Sofie holds a master’s degree in Languages and Literature, a bachelor in HR Management, a post-master’s in Adult Education and a certificate in International Compliance and Ethics.

Professor N. Craig Smith has been on the INSEAD faculty for the past ten years as the INSEAD Chair in Ethics and Social Responsibility. He was previously on the faculties of London Business School, Georgetown University, and Harvard Business School. At INSEAD, Smith teaches and directs programs on business ethics and compliance and corporate social responsibility/sustainability. Smith directs the INSEAD Healthcare Compliance Implementation Leadership Programs in Fontainebleau and the INSEAD Ethics and Compliance Leadership Program in Singapore.
Smith’s research is at the intersection of business and society, encompassing business/marketing ethics, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability strategies. He is the author, coauthor or coeditor of eight books and forty articles in academic journals. Smith’s journal articles and case studies often address ethics, corporate responsibility and compliance in the healthcare industry, including topics such as pharmaceutical marketing practices, drug pricing, and access to essential medicines.
